16v Won't idle
« on: 17 January 2011, 09:59 »
Mate of mine picked up a 16v (abf) for free as it was spitting oil. Everything is sorted except it won't idle!

Starts up fine, keep your foot on the accelerator and all is fine. take your foot off and it dies! Tried cleaning the Throttle Body and had a search!

Am i right in thinking that it would be ISV? Did they come with them? If so can some one point out on the below picture where it would be please? Am i right in thinkin it should be behind the throttle body?

The ISV is situated beneath the black plastic ignition lead holder just in front of the dipstick.

the thick rubber breather hose from the side of the airfilter box actually leads to it.

You should also check all the vacuum hoses.

Hmmm yea, well I replaced the main vac hose up to the ECU and didnt make sure it was freeflowing had it pinched through the bulkhead area and mine wouldnt idle until I sorted that problem!

had loads of issues with mine not idling - first thing i would do is get it on VAGCOM see what errors come up. i would suspect the breather pipe from the inlet manifold to the ecu would be the culprit. (usually shows as inlet manifold pressure sensor on vagcom).
failing that coolant temperature sensor?? isv does tend to go - clean it with petrol and a little redex, making sure you dont get the electrics wet. if possible see if you can swap for one you know is working!!

Failing that there are hundreds of threads on hear if you use the 'search box' work your way through the list till its sorted.
