Manual fuel filler cap opening
« on: 30 December 2010, 17:20 »
recently had a problem with my golf where the comfort ecu messed up and i running low on fuel and couldnt open the fuel filler cap, found some posts saying there isnt a manual way..... there is
open the boot and pull back the material under the plastic shelf the parcel rests on, then stick your head at the most akward way possible and look up a few inches above the top of the filler cap and there is a thin metal rod leading to a solenoid which pulls the lever when the button works, with some long nose pliars you can lift it up and pop goes the cap, takes some fiddling not much force tho .
good luck
Tom

Good to know that, just in case mine breaks.  Was the button to open the fuel cap from inside an optional extra on the mk5?

Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

well not actually a gti owner but this is the best forum for golfs i found. ive got a 1.9 tdi se but imsure they wont change stuff like that model to model on the golf. i do have a electric button on my drivers door thats it tho and it says in the manual that there is no manual opening :/

I suppose it's not officially a manual way of opening it.. just vw covering themselves incase you go poking around in there and breaking something under warranty/electrocute yourself

Really though, it's all very well and good having an electric fuel flap, but for something like this wouldnt a manual flap be best? Even a "push to release" type flap, to keep the cover flush with the rest of the body panel

(good find btw Niebz)

mines the SE model mk5 so maybe the basic ones have a manuel one ? still there will be some sort of mechanism there to open it, they all have a key related security thing on the flap or lid i guess tho
