exhaust c clamps - manifold/ downpipe

i have taken off the manifold from the down pipe. there was 2 C clamps holding them together. i have no  idea how to put em  back on, yes i no you can get a tool for it but taken a look and it was $75 from US.

i have used search function and cannot find a solution.

i may just have to go to dealers and ask them. i dont particularly want to do this as i cannot test the work i have done (head gasket) let alone bleed up the coolant etc.

anybody got any ideas on how to open the clamps by about half inch?

rops round them and pull it with a crowbar leaveing off the subframe works  but needs 2 people. 

other than that you have to make a tool to wind them out.

just to let you know, i tried VW, kwikfit and a local garage who deal with alot of older vdubs...none had a clue what i was talking about, not even when i showed them!

cant take credit for that idea, i read it on cgti years and years ago. cant even take credit for the pic, i nicked it from someone else
