All depends what you want from your car, i have GT TDi had it for 4 odd years now not really had any major problems apart from wear & tear they are both good cars as long as they have been looked after and serviced correctly.

Well, I'm looking for something with a bit of power to put it bluntly

And I love golfs, I've never come across a car within my budget that has the same quality.

I've had my 1999 GT TDI for nearly 5 years now and have not had any problems that you wouldn't expect through normal wear and tear etc.
Mine has just hit 213000 miles!

Major ones really were the clutch at 187000 and I've just done the timing belt for the second time since owning it.

Definitely the most reliable and relatively maintenance free vehicle that I have owned and great performance vs economy compromise.

Swap the tdi for a gti?! oh dear, a 1.8 gti that is slower than my old 1.6 corsa yet drank twice as much fuel! Id stick with the tdi to be honest.

If you're after more power but want to stick with the golf and avoid high insurance then perhaps a 150bhp TDi is a good option - I think the most powerfull 2000 TDi is only 115bhp and from 2002 150bhp are available?
