16v heads
« on: 17 December 2010, 11:07 »
Got a kr 9a and abf engine. The abf is havin probs, got a nasty rattling noise, and I may have to nick bits off the other 2 engines. All 3 have the same part no. on head, except the kr doesn't have the suffix 'd' on the end like the abf/9a.. So am I right in thinkin I can use valves/buckets/complete head from the 9a if needs be? The abf I have is an early 1, it has the same style rocker cover and gasket as the other 2.. The kr is a late 1, from a 91 h reg car, and also the fact it starts 051 not 027 says its late? Can someone confirm what I'm thinkin? Don't need a link to a thread, and I know I can search 4 it, jus wouldn't mind a simple yes/no answer. Thanks in advance,

all 3 heads can be swapped about, just fit the abf cams into whichever head you use. i wouldnt bother swapping the internals between heads, just fit as is. unless you know its worn, in that case just strip, replace stem seals and regrind the valves.  valve guides might need doing the haynes has the testing procedure for checking em.

if it was me id check all 3 heads and use whichever one has the best guides, do the stem seals and lap the valves in. should be enough! check the cam cap bearings for scoring while apart too.

pn starting 051 is actualy a good thing  the 027 heads have a bit of a flaw in there desing,   yes they have a bigger exhaust valve  but the ports not a nice shape and to small for the valve,  hence turbulance int he port sort of kills the bottom end till gas speeds picks up. this was sorted ont he later 051 heads
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
