Noisy Radiator Fan
« on: 14 January 2011, 12:10 »
My radiator fan sounds like concord on take off, after searching threads on here it seems to be a fairly common problem where the smaller fan fails and the larger fan has to work harder to compensate. I have turned the air con on and only the large fan will spin.

Most people were fortunate to have this done under warranty, my car is well out of warranty. I spoke to a specialist who told me they would have to replace both fans as the fan in my car was most likely Siemens and they changed manufacturer to Brose and that the different makes don't work together.

Anyway I called VW parts to get a price for the small fan and he confirmed that new part was made by Siemens. So now I'm well confused, can I get away with just changing the small fan, or does this problem usually mean the large fan is actually the problem and is why you need to replace both?

For anyone who wants to know, the small fan is £155.64 and the large fan is £250ish so as you can guess I really want to know if I can just replace the smaller fan.

Excellent guide for replacing the fan(s) to help anyone else in this boat - http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4902624-DIY-Cooling-Fan-Replacement

In my case the smaller fan had seized - check yours as you may be able to free it up with a bit of elbow and WD40
