clonk noise update-whats wrong with the old girl?

Well I had the car fixed at the local garage, they said the noise was due to the fact that nobody had put a metal sleeve in the rear wishbone and it was moving about.  The noise stopped for about 90 miles and i was like wow they were right, fantastic.
Then out of the blue it started again   Then after a hundred miles of clonk clonk it just stopped!

I had it in at vw in edinburgh and they said as far as they could see there was nothing wrong with it.  Of course the noise has become intermittent now and only seems to do it when im in the car.  It will kind of start as a tiny tapping noise and then five minutes later it will get louder and turn to a clonk type noise, its weird. It sounds like metal on metal plus a creak type noise Driving me insane because none of the garages can see anything wrong with it.

I'm contemplating just changing all of the mounts, and maybe the whole driver side driveshaft.   Don't want to do ythis though because its really cold and i have the money to pay someone to  do it.  Help whats wrong with my car

what side can you hear the noise from. I had a clonc/clickk noise. turned out to be the brake pads 

Do the pedals and steering vibrate when you hear the noise?

coming from the driver side, sort of right in front of the steering wheel when im driving, i tend to e able to hear it more when my window is shut,  the steering wheel ddnt vibrate when i first heard it but now that you mention it, i did feel a very slight vibration this morning when i braked.  Hasn't had new disks or pads for a year so might treat it

Go over a bump and hold the breaks. if the noise goes away then it must be the pads. the clips fall out and cause it to do this.

Have you changed your top mounts recently? If not then what state are they in?

I think dizzy had a problem like this and something was welded. think it was a bolt.

yeah checked the top mounts and they lookec alright, i will test the brakes though and see what happens.  Thx I will keep you posted.  I appreciate your help thx

well it aint the brakes but it does look like its definitely the rear driver side engine mount because its looking fooked when i shine my torch in there.  Looks like its the sort of thing that i can fit myself except i can't be arsed because looking at the bolt that goes right through the middle of it, looks like its gonna be a bastard to get off.  Also I can't find anything in the haynes manual about engine mounts.  Think I'm gonna just pay someone lilke forty quid or sommat to fit it.  The question is, why he hell didnt vw in edinburgh spot this.  I think its outrageous.  I got my mate to take the clutch to biting point with the handbrake on last night and the whole rear of the engine tried to climb out.

well the noise has dissapeared and it turned out to be the engine mount.  I also realised that my pads and discs were nackered so it could have been a combination of both of these.  Thank you everyone for your help its much appreciated

there's a section for engine mounts in the 8v engine chapter its only the front one thats a twit to do!hope this helps
