Huge misfire

Hi i have a huge misfire on my 1.8t, well i say its a misfire but its only intermitant it started last night on my back to portsmouth basically it sounds more like a subaru than a golf in the fact that i have power but its very lumpy all the way through the rev range and so im not sure wether its the plugs or the cat it had a new maf fitted a couple of months ago and a new n75 valve could anyone give me some info

I would place money on it being a coil pack issue.

Same way you check normal spark plugs, take them out one at a time, earth them somewhere on the engine, and then turn the ignition over. (helps to have someone else looking in the engine bay whilst you do it) Keep an eye on the spark from the plug.

just one more thing it might sound silly but if it is that should i replace all four coils and the plugs or will i get away with one coil pack and new plugs

Generally I would replace all 4, just for peace of mind, but you can do just the one.

They are a little on the pricey side, £30 each I think not including a plug.

i had same thing with mine few weeks ago it turned out to be ignition amplifier bolted to side of air box all i did to determine this is with engine running dissconnect coil packs one at a time,if its firing it will try and cut out if it makes no differance you know you got the right one try swapping coil packs around see if you can move problem to another cylinder if it does then u know its a coil pack,if it makes no differance check voltage to plug if nothing threre then defo amp hope this helps mate  :wink:
