Help and/or advice on wheel bearings (potentially)
« on: 22 November 2010, 19:24 »
Remember the other week when I asked about a squealing noise coming from the front which turned out to be a stone stuck in the brake cover? Well, there appears to be another noise coming from the front. It's a sort of droning noise (not really there whilst driving along, well not that you can hear over my slightly blowing centre box anyway). The other thing to note is that when going between forward and reverse there is a noticeable clonk that you can feel through the steering wheel. I feels like it's coming from the near-side front, like the ball joint or something is loose or slack. I've checked the ball joint and it's fine, I've also had the thing jacked up and checked for any play in the wheels. There doesn't seem to be and everything is as tight as a drum. All the bushes look good as well. I just wondered if this could be the signs of a wheel bearing on its way out or gone. Not really sure what to look for so any help would be appreciated.

Right, had another ferret about tonight and everything around the front end seems fine and tight (well as it should be really, I think). The more I think about it and the the feel of it when driving, could be looking at engine mounts possibly....maybe??
There is definate engine movement when you lift off and plant the throttle. It's definately not a secure as it should be. What do you reckon folks? Could this be the clonk I'm hearing when I actually start moving from forward to reverse and vice versa. I'm pretty sure the gearbox mounting at least could do with being replaced.

get someone to drive car slowly forward/backward in a carpark with bonnet open while you have a look. you'll soon see the engine leaping about if a mount is shot :)
