newbie mk3 gti problems :(
« on: 28 November 2010, 11:05 »
Had this car les than 24 hours and having problems
A couple of times the engine has cut out when driving along and then this morning it did it again but then took ages to fire up,i wouldnt even know where to start looking but if theres any commen problems like this then maybe someone can point me in the right direction.
Also after popping down the shop i came back to a nasty smell and slight smoke coming from drivers side rear brake disc and the alloy is hot, obviously sticking somewhere but its just the one corner, where would i start, maybe handbrake cable? the pads and discs are fairly knew and didnt think that pads and disc tend to seize up like that,in fact i did think the handbrake felt a bit strange. any ideas much appreiciated, i have a got a haynes on the way
Oh yeah one more problem, theres a small braided hose only very short which attaches to a very small green pipe right at the back of the engine and the other end of braided hose attatches to a black plastic pipe, the braised hose has split and if i put my finger on the pipe i can see its sucking. what does this do? il add a photo later anyway to help.
I've also just bought a clutch kit from gsf and am lookin for someone to fit for cash.roughly how much should I be paying? Also got a cambelt and tensioner, how much should that cost to fit? Cheers,Dave

Jack the car up, take the rear calliper off and check it anything is sticking, as for the starting check sparks, Dizzy, your Throtel body maybe cloged up as that seems to be the main problem with MK3's :/

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Mark 3 Mate   As suggested the first place to start would be to clean the throttle body. This is a common issue with the Mark 3 and is a regular job. Do a search in the Mark 3 section for a guide on how to do but it takes about an hour to do and costs nothing. A good place to start and should cure the cutting out issue. The pipe you mention is one part of the breather pipes and should be replaced really. This would make the car run better and improve fuel economy. As for the brakes sticking. If you can get under the rear wheels you will be able to see the hand brake adjusters on the rear of the caliper. Undo the one nut to adjust the cable. There is also an adjuster under the rear ashtray but it will more than likely be the rear adjuster creating your problem.
Another thing to do with your new motor is to get it scanned on Vag Com for any fault codes. This will tell you any current and possibly some old faults the car has had. Cables and software can be found on E.Bay for around a tenner or try to find someone on here local to you and offer beer tokens.   Good Luck
