Beetle (The new old one)
« on: 08 May 2011, 20:25 »
Hello chaps,

After a bit of advice really.

I have decided to get myself a MK5 GTI so I'm goin to give my MK4 1.8 N/A to my missus.

We went to a local car place and she got offered £2500 for P/X the golf which would mean paying extra £495 for a 1.6 beetle, 2002, 45k on the clock.

Does anyone have any experience of them, I know it's a 1.6 but for 12 mile round trip to work she does I reckon it will be fine and hopefully economical.

Cheers for any replies,

Jack

I would stick with the Golf, I don't think the 1.6 would be any better on fuel tbh.

By "new old one", are we talking about the Mexican Classic shape? Or the one based on the Mk4? If the former, they are known to corrode like crazy, and their engines are ancient.

If it's the 100hp 1.6 8v then it's a really nice engine - quite torquey and makes driving around town very easy. But then my experience of it is in a smaller car..

if its just for the mrs's and she aint after anything too fast then yeah go for it!! there deffo a girlie car, my mrs made me trade my turbo golf in for one when her company car (mini cooper) came to an end, she wanted something 'funky' but a vw so that was what we chose, we got the 1.8 t 20v turbo one, only as the 2.0 ones she was looking at were lower spec , bad on fuel and burnt oil badly and with me driving it occasionally i didnt want a slow thing... , ours is all good a 2001 model, similar probs to mk4 golfs so no big issue there, i think the 1.6 should be ok if your not bothered about driving it or shes not bothered about driving fast, will deffo be better on fuel than the 2.0 or the 1.8t. i'd say go for it as it dosnt seem a bad deal either!!
