mot coming up :S
« on: 19 October 2010, 17:29 »
So ive got my mot coming up and was just looking for a few bits of advice.
Would any of these make it fail?
Flashing oil light?
Abs light on?
Can any1 tell  me where the ecu and oil pressure switch is on an 8v please?
Would a rusty baxbox fail me? No holes on it or anything and still does the job.
Is there any other bits i should pay attention to/ check over?

alright mate the dreaded mot lol
well to answer some of your questions
1. flashing oil light wont affect your mot (might wanna check your oil level though) and the oil pressure thing is on the top of the oil filter housing think its the back one brown top from memory.
2. abs light is a straight fail (best thing to do for mot is disconnect the light by removing the plastic surround where the light is on and taking the plug off the back  ) should pass then
3. back box shouldnt fail because its rusty as long as theres no holes affecting emissions leaks etc anywhere on the exhaust also the mounting rubbers and brackets need to be intact .
4. check your tyres are above legal limit, check all seat belts work by gving them a tug should lock straight away, check you can open all doors from inside and outside (no broken handles etc), check sills arnt corroded or maybe looking at welding!  , brakes are working correctly obviously your abs might not be but shouldnt affect breaking to much mine has passed twice with no abs working ! i prefer no abs tbh i purposely disconnected mine! theres other checks you can do yourself but thats the main instant fails could make sure none of your springs arn't snapped by bouncing the car on every corner and see if it settles with about one bounch that will check your shock absorbers arnt shot hope this helps

Just a little side note to the highlighted bit above.....if the MOT guy is on the ball he WILL look to see if the light comes on with the ignition then go's off once the system check is complete. This happened with me and i changed the rear sensor and it only cost £15 from euro parts.

Your best bet is to get it scanned for faults to idenfity if it's a faulty sensor and if so which one. Then armed with that knowledge and the guide that is around here somewhere you can have a cheap fix and a car that deserves to pass an MOT

i dont want to give you false information so you look a nob at the garage but im sure that will be fine ive even taken my abs cables off my car and removed the sensors completely so atleast if they say anything about the light i would say something like it dosnt have abs anymore nothing wrong with that. air bag dosnt work either and thats on the same panel just paint it black lol

I forgot to mention, my power steering pump/belt squeals like a banshee when i turn the wheel at low revs, does that mean the belts loose?
Also on idle and under load the engine makes a ticking noise but i dont know if its the power steering pump or a leak in the manifold but when i sit at a constant speed its silent and smooth as a nut :s
does anyone know where the ecu is on an 8v?

 yeah just disconnect anything that doesn't work, who needs ABS or Airbags anyway..

ECU should be under the passenger side of the rain tray, might need to take the wipers off to get at it though!

That means that the belt is slipping, either because the belt is loose or it's perished. Nice and easy to change though
