Outside car covers - recommend any?
« on: 03 October 2010, 21:18 »
Hi there

In the absence of a garage, thought I would purchase a good car cover for my Mk2 GTI for this winter, to protect it from the elements.   Can anyone recommend one that is a reasonable price?

Thanks

Ideally you want a breathable one. So that it protects the paint and the cover will not adhere to the paintwork and pull colour off.

Although the downfall to that is that they let water through as it is a permeable membrane.

My personal choice would be to get a permeable membrane, then get some waterproof over the top of it. I.E. Breathable car cover tailored to the car, then a large sheet of tarpaulin over the top of that.

You should expect to pay ~£40 for the cover, then ~£10 for the tarpaulin. Oh and some bungee cords can help to pin corners down, and go underneath the car so as not to catch or scratch bodywork.

I got a medium size cover from halfords for my Mk3. £40 it cost. it does say on the destructions that it is no good for long term storage and the car should be aired every couple of days... I bought mine for protection from my 3 cats... they like to sit on the roof of the cars and look into the windows of the house  I used to wake up and find little muddy paw prints all over my car, highly annoying esp when i have spents hours valeting it lol

Argos were doing one in there clearance sale for £5, not sure if they still have it on offer... and i did see a decent one in poundstretcher for £15

Cant you get like tent material covers, breathable and waterproof, unless you rub the water in with your hand?

I had a monsoon cover it was about £200 got it made special for the Rallye due to the extra wide body kit, but they do a standard one which is breathable and straps for underneath for £120. Only issue is you really have to clean the car before sticking on due to the soft material underneath otherwise any dirt will move and scratch the paint!

If you want the bees knees and can afford it then go for one from this crew.

Mine was £250, you have to wash the car before you fit it so no good if it is your daily. It is tailored to be an exact fit - they even ask if it is the big or small bumper version. Waterproof and breathable - the best you can buy imo.
