Golf GTD
« on: 02 September 2010, 22:33 »
I have a VW Golf GTD Sport 170.

The vehicle has just been serviced and no problems were found but Im sure something is wrong. When driving on the motorway in 5th or 6th gear around 1800 - 2100 revs the car feels like its juddering, almost like i was tapping my foot quickly on the accelerator. The other morning when the road was quiet I wanted to test the power. I slowed down to 10mph put the car into second gear and booted it. The car quicky took off but at 2400 revs there was a complete loss of power for a split second before it took off again.

Any suggestions?

I'm no expert with diesels but you won't go wrong if you can find a fellow member with a vcds cable to do a scan and live logging on your car looking for faults.

The cable looks like a real vcds cable but be aware that the pricing on that page is for just the software cd and not the cable.

Sounds like your problem is with your DPF (diesel particle filter) The juddering and loss of power is the system trying to regenerate itself.

There have been lots of issues with theses filters and VW have done a quick fix by uploading revised software at service time. The problem with this is it is losing around 15bhp in the process. They hoped that most people would not notice, but word has got out.

There are companys that will fit a Milltek DPF replacement pipe and remap the ECU to take out the regeneration process altogether. This mod will not only cure the problem, but will see you with anything between 220-240bhp with better fuel economy. Also at around £6-700, it is cheaper than replacing the factory DPF with a new one.

JBS at Chesterfield seem to be on the ball, so it might be worth giving them a call.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Solid advice there and if I was in your shoes would do the same. The 170 GT Sports have been a history of DPF problems.

DPF.... I could be wrong but you need to make sure you take it out for a good blast on the mway to ensure the DPF works as it should...

If it's anything to do with the DPF the warning light will show on the dash,& to clear it drive for a few minutes at 2000rpm and this will burn of the soot.
