Turbo trouble ...

does anybody know signs of a turbo beginning to pack up, my mate thinks his turbo is on the way out,  its started hissing and whisling morethan usual ?? i dont no nothing about turbos lol just wanted no if any1 has any ideas 
he is driving a mk4 golf GT

GT TDI or GTI Petrol?

It could be a simple boost leak if its hissing and whistling.

Depends where it is. If its just popped off from the silly VW clipping system it may just need pushed and resecured, or it could just need a new hose.

Get him to have a look at the air pipes for oily residue try to pull the connections apart they should stay in situ and not move much. He could also rev while you listened for escaping air.

Oil usage/leaking, worn prop bearing, low boost pressure...
