Speedometer trouble.
« on: 03 October 2010, 12:46 »
Hi. Has anyone experienced this kind of problem. Speedo suddenly died on my mk3 8v 1997 gti. Engine AGG. About the same time as the fuel guage just started rising and lowering by itself. Now Im not suggesting that the problems are linked, its just a bit strange. The speedo problem is a swine cos some times when Im driving it will shoot up and register for about 10 secs and then its back down again. The fuel guage. Well that just keeps rising and then lowering. Any ideas anyone? Any help would be gratefully received. Cheers. Steve.

As a add on to the above. Ive taken the speedo transducer out and then started the car and then spun the transducer by hand. Nothing registered on the speedo clock. But should it have done? Clutching at straws at the minute. Any one out there with any ideas?

only thing i can think of is either the unit is simply fubar'd or possibly theres a dodgy bit of wiring round the back? try removing the whole unit refitting it again, see if that helps

yeah does sound more like a dash fault, but check the wiring to the speedo sensor on the gearbox (its the 3 pin one) and look for loose or dirty brown/white wires to the side of the head.

speedo problem sounds same as the one i had. i had to replace the sensor which was about £20 from VW. was easy to do. for the sake of £20 may as well change it anyway

Cheers for replies. Yeah I think I,ll source a new transducer. If its not that I can always sell the transducer on hopefully.

You might also have a problem with the cluster assembly.
