1993 clutch cable problems
« on: 23 September 2010, 21:33 »
I am trying to replace the clutch plat bearing on my 8V 1993 GTI. I have removed the end cap and revealed the bearing behind the spring loaded arm. I have been told to disconnect the clutch cable to release the arm but i am struggling to disconnect the clutch cable mine has a rectangular cable fitting. Please help as my car is currently jacked up to the max onits left side on the dark and rain!!!!!!

to release the cable you need to compress it, there should be a big while double clip on it, which you have to pull down and attach to the 2 lugs on the bottom part of the cable. if you are missing this piece then you may have to jack the car up on the release arm in order to get enough slack to release the cable. its not an ideal way to do it, only other option is to cut the cable and buy a new one

   Thanks for your advice. Mine does not have the white pieces to pull down but i managed to compress the cable after pumping the clutch several times to create enough slack and by pulling the clutch arm up and pushing the cable through it the clip released from the bottom. Would have been easier with two people so if youre going to try and do the same ask a friend to help.

Any way all sorted, finished in the dark with a head torch on, but travelled 250 miles today and it didnt skip a beat. No rattling and the clutch has self adjusted back to its normal much higher pedal position...... happy days!!!!!!

Now I have to sort out the leaking sun roof before the winter sets in and i need to buy terrapins for the pasenger footwell!!!!!
