How should I paint my engine cover?

Hi guys, thought I knew what I was doing.  Got a MK5 GTI and am prepping the engine cover to paint it silver and black. Just to make sure I am going to do it properly, how should I get the car ready?
Is it sand, primer, sand spray, gloss/final coat?
If so where is the best place, and any techniques to it.

Get it powder coated mate its easier and will last much longer than just normal rattle can paint due to high tempuratures..

Cheers mate, Is that just for the top coat? Where can I get that sorted, is it something I can do myself or should I get a body shop to help me out?

Surely it will melt the plastic when it goes in the oven!
