Newbie in need of help mk4 golf gti 2.0 running very fast

I have just got my self a w reg golf gti 2.0l 8v my prob i am having at the moment is the engine idles around 2000 to 2500 revs and if i am standing still and put the car in gear and just lift the clutch with out using gas the revs drop right down and the engine splutters but jumps between 800 and 1000 revs running rough driving her she is flawless also noticed when i start it up the rev kick straight in and sounds like the stater moto sqreaching can any one put any light on whats wrong and just to confirm engine management light is on

I'd put my money on the TB, have you scanned it yet, as the codes will give you an idea what it could be.

erm Tb is that the throttle body? it as been on the computer yeah was told it comes up with the code for the secondary air system,air pump thing,

Yeah, throttle body. Do you have the error code?

I've had a similar issue and it was the TB, but it could also be the MAF etc... I'm sure people can help you more.

thanx for your help I dont have the error code sorry was told it was some air pump thing but then told its eliminate process to be honest cant do that will cost a fortune if i did

yeap was the throttle bottle changed it today coz i had one of a 98 audi a4 work spot on but the engine managment light is still showing so must be the air pump as gone to

Defo sounds like an air leak mine was like that the other day it was some kind of sensor and your starter motors fine it will work for ever it's just a the bearings in it fooked had mine changed tho it realy started to pi$$ me off
