cam belt advice!!!
« on: 12 December 2005, 21:42 »
hi all, just got dropped off by my good mechanic vw nut friend. took my 1.8t in for simple service, oil, filters blah. i've had a bit of a rattle for a few weeks, i thought it was the turbo, so i've been putting it out of my mind(bank account). it turns out its the small hydraulic piston that keeps the tensioner pushed up. (sorry i can't remember the name, maybe idler pully) the seal has gone on the piston, therfore not keeping the belt tight. this was causing the tensioner to rattle at 1200-1400 revs. the belt was literaly hanging by a thread!!!! the belts and pulleys were done 10000 miles ago but not the part thats failed, according to reciepts and service log. i'm no mechanic, but was mightily relived when the source of the rattle was found. i was just wondering if this is a common thing with 1.8t mk 4? also should i get the water pump renewed whilst i,ve got the thing in pieces and me cheque book open? ta

idler pulley should be changed at the same time as the belt/tensioner, its quite often the part that fails. water pumps are generally good for 80-100k miles, but if its in pieces anyway, its not an expensive part to replace.. could save you some trouble in the future.

just got the lot done 10k after it was last done, including the idler puller this time. water pump disintegrated on the way out (94k), so much relieved i went for the new one. thanks for the advice. £140 all in!!! aswell as the original service. i don't know why some people go to the stealers. i had to stand round and lend a hand where necessary ie. keeping the kettle primed and the tea bags mashed. the horrible part was finding three big funking nails in the tyres while she was on the ramp. ta for the advice. now where do i get a new set of rubber from?. ho hum.

I found Ebay good for tyres, bought 4 * brand new Conti Sports from a Bora (W rated 16") on steels. Buyer had gone straight for big alloys, so only done delivery mileage. All in £120 - worked out at £35 per tyre fitted and chucked the brand new steels in the bin. Kwik fit price for the same tyre was £100+

There were quite a few similar deals on Ebay when I looked, I just waited for a local one to turn up.
