Door catching wing..

The passenger door on my 3 door 90 spec mk2 is catching on the front wing and causing it to rub metal on metal! The wing looks like it's never been taken off or anything as it's a good fit against the rubber water channels by the windscreen. We've tried pulling on the door while it's loosened on the two 17mm hinge bolts as we tighten them back up but it is no different.

The gap on the door vertically is fine, it just seems to be catching!


What can I do for this?

get it to a body shop and get them to look at it...

Could be something or nothing...

TBH to me it sounds like it could be serious as the hinges on the door are part of the A pillar...

Unless the door ones have gone and I dont think they can be adjusted...

had this problem when i got mine back from paint. Off came the wing - rubber mallet on the part that was fouling (wing). Sorted.

but does sound serious as above. The only way to tell if its been off is to look at the wing sealant which is under the wheel arch. if the sealer is broken then its obvious.

What can I do for this?

Your description is not very clear, is the door catching in the closed position? is it catching while swinging open? or is it catching when fully open, and the edge of the wing is sitting against the door skin, resulting in a crease? If its the last, then this points to the "Check arm" failing, and is a simple nut and bolt job to fit a new mechanism,
The other symptoms may point towards some sort of hinge problem, possibly a sheared pin, or body damage of some sort. or even just the door dropped...
You need to look a little further, and get some pics up if you cant get to the bottom of it...

If you've loosened the 17mm bolts and adjusted them, and there's still no difference then that doesn't sound too good. I had this problem briefly when I swapped a door - but sorted it after I adjusted the bolts.

It just rubs against the wing while opening and closing at about the halfway point. I'll take some pictures. Thanks for the info so far

I thought those bolts had no adjustment?

They don't? You may be right, though I definitely managed to get mine to sit right after I undid the bolts, and tightened them again whilst someone pulled the door in the right direction.

There is about a 1/2mm each and thats it...

I have an issue with a replacement door on one of my golfs... The hinge dont match the door... Lump hammer helped...

There is also the Jack under the door method I have read about but never tried..
