I am looking to change my standard suspension to either lowered fixed setup or coilovers.
i am looking to drop the car max 40mm allround (gti mk1)
and looking to retain as much comfort as possible - kinda similar to standard setup.
i dont want to spend alot max 250-300 quid as i need to get other bits sorted.
I have seen a few kits out there:
Hottunning or raceland coilovers £160

Jom coilovers £200

jamex coilovers £200

Ap coilovers £370

i know the ap coilovers have had good reviews can other people who have used some of the over coilovers comment on the ride quality compared to the standard setup? not looking for handling improvements as most coilovers will give that, looking for ride quality?
or is there fixed rate kits that might be better suited?

Hey Bling,

I have FK's fitted to mine and I think that you can get them for a reasonable price nowadays. One thing I would say is that normally if you drop bu 40mm you will make the rode a little more crashy, not sure there's anyway round that.

For info, i've been hearing reasonably good things about the hot tuning coil overs but I haven't any personal dealings with them - they're pretty cheap!

cheers for the reply, i did consider fk but i was told by someone that in in fk the only ones to go for is the konigsport.
does anyone have a picture of a mk1 gti with a genuine 40mm drop coz i thought that wasn't a lot of a drop?

I'm normally of the same principle but the hottunning ones seem to be rated by some peeps on mk1 owners, like I say I don't know, just passing on whats been said by others - maybe have a look on there too bling?!

I have been running Vmax coilovers on my mk1 for about 16 months now and they seem to be fine.
No rusty springs, and no sqeeks as of yet. And after daily use for the past year, I raised my car a bit more just the other day with no problems but mind you they were a bit dirty lol

  • If I can't fix it at home, it ain't getting fixed.
if you dont wanna go that low and you're happy with 40mm dont bother with coilovers IMO. go for something like eibach shocks and bilsten 40/60mm springs.  Nice ride, nice handling no fuss.  that or something from boge.  Coilovers only really good for slamage unless you spend a fortune.
