Electrical issue
« on: 11 January 2005, 16:04 »
Hi all,

Since i've had my mk1(early oct) i've noticed the dash backlight flickers when then engines running, i've also noticed the headlights flicker slightly too. The car starts with no problem and the battery light stays on until i press the accelerator once. However, it continues to flicker throughout a drive even if its been a decent distance.

Anyone have any ideas to what could be wrong? Worth replacing the battery or getting the alternator checked? Is there anyway i can check the alternator myself?

Any help appreciated.
Lewis.

HAve a look at the brushes on the alternator and see if they are worn. Easier to replace it with a reconditioned one though than mess about trying to fit new brushes yourself.

Sounds like the voltage regulator might be playing up. The voltage regulator and brushes come as one unit and easily replaced by removing 2 screws on the back of the alternator. For the sake of around ?7 or ?8 I'd say that is well worth a try
