Well if its any consoltation, the mother in laws got a new Merc S-Class and the sat nav dosen't take a full postcode (the S-Class cost them over 60K) 
 
A previous car I owned, a Mazda 6 2.3 Sports Saloon (53 Plate) with factory fitted sat nav took a full postcode (a 22K car at the time). One of the best sat nav system I ever used.

So this seems like an area the German's need to learn something from the Jap's
