Rough idle ISV?
« on: 03 August 2010, 15:38 »
Car has had a rough idle since i bought it. have changed every part thinkable to try and solve this. Bought a second hand isv from EBAY for £5 - which was a bargain ;-). however when i put it on, the car just stalls - i think the seller may have been telling porkies when he described it as 'in good working order'??? My old one works but the rev counter fluctuates between 800 and 2000 revs. Other than that it drives smooth.
I have tried cleaning my existing one but problem remains. anyone know if you can test your isv any other way? need to know if it is actually faulty? Or suggest other things it could be - there maybe something i have not tried.

losing the will to live lol

cheers

Clean out withcarb cleaner.

Look at one end, should be a hole where an allen key should fit, try turning it back and forth a
couple of times to loosen it up.

Yeah have tried cleaning it out with a whole can of cleaner. still no improvement. also took the whole allen bolt out as it was rusty and cleaned that too. - I think the rubber bung it sits in looks a bit iffy - is that likely to effect the idle at all?

On another note, the previous owner obviously had an induction kit and then for some reason put an 8v airbox in - In doing this they for some reason did not plug in the inlet air temp sensor(the one that sits in the side of the airbox) and instead have soldered one which just dangles loose in the engine bay? this cant be helping can it?  :undecided:

If any unmetered air is getting in then it can affect things so yes if the rubber bung is damaged then try replacing it.

I take it you have a 16v then..?

That sensor should be attached iinto the side of the airbox, if its hanging loose in the engine bay then the ecu is getting the wrong information so it won't be helping things.
