« on: 12 January 2005, 23:59 »
can anybody shead any light on why my mk 4 1999 T 1.8 20v gti has developed a really annoying "clonking" that seems to be coming from the suspension.i only here it when driving over pottholes and rough roads, and it's getting worse!!!!!all ball joints seem ok,i've had top strutt mountings replaced and my local mechanic(whom i have a lot of faith in!) thinks it might be the steering rack!thing is,i'm not convinced that this is the problem.can someone out there help me????

Usual cause of that is worn bushes, you'd normally feel vibrations at certain speeds through the steering wheel if the rack was knackered.

i don't know if its the same problem as yours, but with my 99 golf, when i bought it, every time i used to drive over pot holes an rough roads, i used to here a clonking noise, first it started coming from the front left side, then a few days later the front right side.

so after going to my local mechanic, first he said it might be the suspensions, but he had a look and said nah the suspensions fine, then he said it might be the anti row bar link, so i had them both replaced, an to this day that noise has gone.

don't know if this helps mate, but it sounds like the same fault as mine......
