8 x 13" Alloys
« on: 06 January 2005, 11:57 »
Hi,

I'd like to fit some 8 x 13" alloys (to a Mk1 GTi), but Ive got a few concerns and was wondering if any one has any info that could help me?
Firstly what kinda offset will i need?  Secondly what size of tire can i get away with, i like this stretched look a lot of people go for but how practical is it?
Any help anyone can give would be tidy!!!!

I am running 8x14 on the front with 195/45/14 tyres, and 9x14 on the rear with 215/40/14 tyres. I have also had the car lowered on coilovers. It is totally impractical as an everyday car, and every journey has to be planned in advance, to avoid potholes, speedbumps, and bad road surfaces. I am unable to carry rear passengers due to the excessive width of the rear tyres, and getting any garage to order/fit/repair a tyre is a nightmare.
Despite all this I would still reccommend them, as they look fantastic and really turn heads. especially when all the cars are running around on the 17/18/19" wheels, and I am hugging the ground on my Steffans.
For good advise on which wheels would be suitable for your car, speak to Dubmeister (advertises in PVW/Golf+ etc)

Cheers Adam,

That doesn't sound like to much of a nightmare! Did you have to do much arch work? I like the idea of nice n small, but wide a s f**k. What sort of coilovers are u running?

I've got FK coilovers - the handling is fantastic, but the ride is extremely harsh. The arches had already been rolled for the 17's that used to be on the car. But the rears still foul the arch because of the width of  he wheel. 8 inches would probably be ok though.

The only company that makes a tyre at 215/40/14 is Continental. I have been to several tyre suppliers and none have ever heard of this size, and had to contact their suppliers to get me a price. Due to the width of the wheel and the stretching of the tyre, there are not many places that would attempt to fit the tyre to the rim either.
