do you mean the large 19mm 12point bolt in the middle? if so the crank sprocket has probably sheared its keyway, and the crank itself could be damaged as well

Yes thats the bolt...
the pistons still comes up and the mark on the flywheel is still inline when piston 1 is up...

tbh the crank pully mark isn't important anyway, what matters is the cam lines up when the flywheel is at tdc. with the ign timing line up the rotor arm to the notch on the dizzy, and put spark lead #1 where it is pointing.  this is all you need to do on an ADY or AGG. with a 2E you need to tweak the ign timing, and i think its gotta be done using vag com? you might be able to set it using the method in my mk2 digifant tuning guide though.

trouble is, if the crank sprocket keyway is damaged it will be able to move which will start to throw out the cam timign after a while, eventually leading to possible valve damage. I suspect this might be the ral cause fro the broken bolt, or the broken bolt has led to keyway damage.

have you checked the compression? do you get a spark, and does the fuel pump prime then run when you crank engine over?
