18's on a mk 3

Has anyone put 18's on a mk3, i know there are some out there, was just wondering how much arch work is need, and what the best suspension kit would be, as i take it, it would have to be quite stiff, to avoid scrubbing.

any help would be great

Not sure if this is possible and keep the same rolling radius.

I have 17 x 8's with 215/40 tyres. No rubbing/fouling arches etc. mainly coz i aint lowered it ... yet!

To have 18's u would have to drop to 35 profile. And even then i dont know if this would keep the radius.
Now i can tell ya that with the 40 profile the ride is HARSH! No give in the tyres - you feel every bump and even small stones. And thats with the standard soft suspension, so god knows what it will be like with lowered/stiffened susp.

Why do ya want 18's ??

i've been looking at mk3's for a bit now, i had a vento..

i noticed on the mk3's i've seen at shows etc, that 17#s look nice, but only if they are 8's or larger, also noticed once the car is lowered, 17's actually look quite small on the mk3..

The reason i was looking at 18's is im  looking for a mk3 at the mo, and would like to put the a8 style wheels on it, that are available in 18's also .. just wondering how difficult it is..

Must admit that now i got used to em my 17's dont look that big. Possibly due to the ride height.

Problem i find is with 8" wide the tyres are stretched and dont give any rim protection.
They do look good tho, especially from the rear 3quarter view!

i  put 18's on mine but it was not easy
i bought some rims  with 245 /40/18 rubber
i had to cut the arch lip totally off  that was the plastic arch and the metal lip then i needed 10 mm spacerts   but with standard gti suspension you could have no rear passengers and no pothole or speed bumps or full lock
then i bought some heavy duty rear()not lowered springs and fitted them and the ride eased out
i could carry much weight  but i could get 1 or 2 small people in the back
then i bought some 2nd hand bilsteins spring and dampers and fitted them.
then car suddenly was perfect not a scrape, until they settled a week later and realizing the lowering springs were a bad idea i refitted the heavy duty springs over the Billy's and its cool. i can carry a  car full with no spacers in the back.
although for the week when i had the billy springs on i got quite fond of the look of the arse down so i opted for the improved...i grinds my heavy duties . i cut off about 25mm. about 1 and a half turn at the spring base. not to mention the base plate and the  suspension leg needed cutting back to on the front and back
but thats the story so far and the ride is almost sweet. the from dampers are next. willl probably do the same but not cut the springs .
we will see.
well it all goes to show

when you pay ?600 for a set of rims, your a dick. but your a dick Rollin on 18's
and all the hassle makes life sweet.
