Hey,

Ive had a steep mechanical learning curve since getting my golf but my knowledge of the golf is getting bigger and bigger by the day!

So 3 problems.... but only really 2 as the first 2 are related.

1st and 2nd is that it stall's sometimes *(especially just after startup) and idle's erratically until resting at around 700rpm

Now i checked a few things and the oil pod (PCV i think it's called too) was loose and so as a temporary measure i taped it back in place but the rubber seal has 3/4 gone so will need to replace that! However taping it back together so there is no gaps and it is more secure has reduced the time and the "erratic'ness" of the idling and it is now much quicker at getting to 700rpm and doesn't change as much as it did before (up to 1,500rpm before and as low as 200rpm if not stalling).

So then i also checked the blue temp sender (forgot about it being a coolant pipe and so got that everywhere) but disconnected it and then ran the engine while revving at first and the idle speed was much lower (around 100 to 200rpm but the car shook so was too low). If i don't accelerate then it stall's at first with it disconnected.

So i removed it completely and had a look and it look's partly worn (brown areas and not all gold) so i am thinking just swapping that with a new one would help the idling even more (i gave it a clean too) right?

Would these two problems also cause the emissions to be higher? or is that mainly based on the fuel setting's?

3rd problem...

Squeeling of something? only when the engine first start's and then after slowly revving to 2000rpm it get's worse and then eventually stops (after a few seconds).

Now it is obviously a belt!

So i checked the belt that runs around the Alternator and yep that was loose so took it to the garage as couldn't shift it myself and 3 mins later no problem! Then today the same again but not as bad as before... how can i stop this properly or is it just a case of when they tightened it it didn't make the noise by chance and it is still a little bit slack?

If not could it be the 'toothed' belt hidden by the cover as i took the cover off and although tight as far as i can tell it is the only other belt and starting the car and then looking to see or hear which belt is making all the noise is damn hard (especially when they are soo close together).

That's all for now :)

If it been squealling for a while belt might be worn so if I were you i'd change it there only a few quid then tighten it back up also check the tensioner for the belt on the alternator, the little cog bit on top i had problem with mine most of the teeth were missing so wouldn't tighten properly there only a few quid too

your idling problem is a common issue could be various things. check all vac pipes, rubber bung on rocker cover any splits in these will cause you problems. check throttle cable isnt to tight and defo replace blue temp sender vw original r best.check the 2 micro switches on throttle body r ok and wiring to top one asnt broke. do a search on here loads of answers and info
the belt under the cover you refer to wont be your squeeling problem that is your timming belt which is toothed it is more than likely your fan belt for what they cost id replace it with a new one and see if it solves your problem.  have a look at rubjonys tune up guide will help you alot, you need your idle to be between 850,900 with the blue sender unplugged but any leaks in the vac system will give you false info

Ah ok! Thought they would be more expensive seeing as everything else ive purchased has been in the XX to XXX range!

Will go to the dealership and get them to fit one for me to save me the hassle

Thanks

Ok new belt is in order then!

Will check out the tune up guide right now and see what else i can learn :)

So in reality my idle speed is lower than it is meant to be... or it could be perfect but if there is a leak then it won't be reading properly and it could be doing 1000rpm and only show 100rpm (crazy example).

Yea definitely sounds like an alternator belt. Definitely change it, as mine was squealing over the November-February period occassionally, tightened it up and had no probs til last week when it snapped. Nothing major, just a PITA lol
