Photoshop CS5 Content Aware Fill / Touch up
« on: 02 May 2010, 22:13 »
So I have just been playing with this new feature today and it's pretty powerful, I knew it wouldn't be as simple to what they showed in their video but it is still very useful for the majority of scenarios.

For those of you who don't know what this feature is, it's basically and upgrade from the clone stamp tool, it looks at pixels around your selection and tries to calculate what should be inside the selection you are filling/replacing.

I find it works quite well on a smaller scale and zoomed in but depending on the item you can do a large select and fill then work your way down to save time.

See a basic example below, this didn't take me very long at all to do using the spot healing brush tool with content aware turned on.

Looks like a new watch. :afro: I've never used the clone stamp tool before so I'll give that a go.

here's a more complex example using one of my rejected images

original

after content aware fill; quick lasso around the mirror and then fill

notice the discrepancy in the colours, although the pattern is matched correctly

quick tweak to the levels and overlay with softlight

the patching is less obvious, but would still need more work, but in total that's less than 10 mins from opening the image.

this is a really powerful tool, i found on a larger removal it definatly works best if you do a large seciton, then keep making the selection smaller and smaller, then go over certain areas to make it less obvious that it's a duplicate. I noticed a lot of the time it re-uses one particular surrounding area more than usual.

You can do the same thing by filling an area, I just find out it's easier to use "spot healing brush" with content aware turned on as i often tweak smaller areas rather than larger. like the dust on the watch for example :)
