MAF sensor problem?

my car has spurts of power and you have to feed the throttle half way then full to get the most out of it , had a look at the maf sensor and it looks like theres a build up of sooty stuff on the wire sensor bit, would this make any difference? also would the maff sensro affect the way the car runs i.e power hikes and lows, sometime there is no power in 1st and 2nd then BOOM in 3rd! major power! weird..... golf tdi 130 2002. asz.

ok today it spluttered a bit and load of black smoke then backed off the throttle and back on again and it was fine!!! weird. any ideas guys? if it is the maf sensor then i want to order one asap! thanks.

If I'm right I think the maf sensor controls the flow of air to the engine and has something to do with the amount of fuel pumped in also. This could be causing the problems your having. Rhyso is the Derv Guru and I'm sure he'll share his wisdom once he sees this thread.

hmmm yeh most of the time its fine but if u boot it it sends a load of black smoke out the assend and u gota back off the throttle and kind of feather the throttle in slowly! then its woooosh off u go with no smoke! pain in the ass.

it could well be your MAF

Ideally you need to get it data logged so you can see the figures yourself

what I've found is that a new MAF is helping me sustain fuelling at the top end but my MPG with my old maf is largely unchanged 

Unplug it and take it for a spin - if you see a performance benefit then its goosed

It's easy to make the mistake of getting it changed when it's not that that is causing you the prob, as I know

I just got sh*t mpg which I havn't got to the bottom of as yet, nothing on scans, changed maf, can't find a boost leak, don't drive like Lewis Hamilton so aint got a clue why my mpg is so sh*te. Car runs smooth but mpg very poor.
