mk2 timing issues
« on: 25 April 2010, 18:57 »
Hi,  I have an 8v gti which has just had the head gasket replaced.  While the head was away getting skimmed the markings we placed on the pulleys and timing belt have been washed away.  I am now struggling to time up the car properly.  The crank pulley and half shaft pulley align with each other, the camshaft pulley is aligned with the top of the puley guard.  According to Haynes this is all it needs.  Is there another way to set the timing up?

It starts and idles ok albeit at 1500rpm.  Any ideas of what i need to do to fix it?  I know that is vague but any suggestions appreciated.

Failing that, does anyone know of a good mechanic in the york/selby area?

thanks in advance

The dot on the camshaft pulley should line up with the edge of the head.

If you want an excellent garage in York that is a VW specialist, try Collin Hicks - Both my sons live in York and both use this garage for their Golf Mk 3s (I know Mk3 - sorry)

thanks for the links I am going to attempt this again at the weekend.  Just one question, should I be able to see the marks   inside the gearbox casing when crankshaft, camshaft and intermediate shaft are all at TDC?

cheers,

S

when i did the head gasket i forgot to reconnect the plug that goes onto the throttle body switch  :embarassed: , that caused the idle to be high.
