hi guys,

as title suggests really... 8v gti 92J (2e engine code) is using a fair amount of oil and have checked everywhere for leaks without success and now over the past few days I've noticed more white/grey smoke coming from the rear, generally when changing gear and sitting in traffic etc.

topped the oil up the other night and at the same time took off a few of the hoses and cleaned a fair amount of gunk out of them. Since then the car has actually felt like it's running and pulling better but I'm now quite scared that something very bad is or has already happened.

How scared should I be?

Cheers in advance.

  • I drive a 2000bhp dragster, so what ;)
tail pipe got an oily residue in it?
sounds like bores/pistons/rings OR valve stem seals are worn and allowing oil into the combustion chamber

white gooy-mayo substance on the oil filler cap?
if the above and this, sounds like headgasket

hmmm i'm guessing (as i know a little bit more than jack sh*t about these things) that a ring problem is quite serious?? is it fixable?

bit of a strange addition to the symptons this morning. was driving home and going down hill, in gear, but with foot off the gas and smoke was coming from the rear. more constant than i've seen before, seemed to stop once the road levelled out. not seen this before, as previously mentioned the smoke seemed to appear occassionally when changing gear or sat in traffic.

still very new to gtis only had it 2 months and love it to bits, if it's likely to die :-( looks like im going to have to find me a new one :-)

If it is smoking changing gear then that sounds like valve stem seals.

piston rings would become a a more serious problem the longer its left, it's fixable but requires a pretty much full engine tear down (head off, rods & pistons out, put new rings on, probably give the bores a quick hone to clean them up) then rebuild

valve stem seals isn't such a big repair but does require, rocker cover off, cams out, valve springs off

cheers for the info guys., much appreciated.

now need to decide what to do.....

am thinking, as i was impatient when looking for this and therefore bought it when i may have got a newer/better example if i could have waited and saved a little more, i might just put my head back into the sand and save any cash i would spend on this towards a new one. MOT is up in June so will cross my fingers it lasts till then if I go down this route.

hmmmm decisions decisions..........

If the smoke is blueish then it is definately burning oil.
