Hello and Advice
« on: 04 May 2010, 19:16 »
Hi all, completely new to this forum and completely new to the Golf.  Thinking of getting myself a Mk3 GTI, stripping it down and re-building it the way I want.

Obviously this forum is gonna be very biased towards the car but is there anything I need to watch out for with these cars?

I have a list of stuff I was thinking of doing, still just ideas in the head but just wanted to see what everyone thought and whether these would be possible.  Also anybody with other ideas feel free to chip in, the more the merrier :)

(No particular order)
Strip the car
Treat any rust / dents / chips etc
Full engine service
Paint engine head
ECU Re-map
Induction
Full exhaust system
Clutch
Fuel pump
Braided / silicone engine hoses (I want lots of shiny stuff in the engine :P)
Turbo??? (+ intercooler + dump valve / BOV)???
Full bodykit
Front component speakers
Full boot build (amps + subs)
New brake discs and pads
Lower by 50mm?
Suspension
Alloys
Tyres
Lightweight carbon fibre bonnet
Headlight brows
Xenon angel eye headlights (+ strobes???)
Respray whole car
Something nicer with the seats
Dashboard and steering wheel
Interior lighting
Spoiler

Yep, I know pretty big project I think but I want a real peach of a car when I'm done, no limit on time really, just gonna do it over time.

It is a fair bit of work, I'm not planning to do it all at once though!  Probably gonna be off the road while I play about with it, I'm gonna take my time and make sure I do a proper job.

Engine I wasn't really sure about, now I want it as big as possible (obviously), would love VR6 but I get worried about insurance so I was thinking between 1.4 and 2.0.

Welcome to the forum

With that kind of money being spent on it, would recommend using the VR6 as it's the better of the Mk3s (IMO) Wouldn't go for a body kit or spoiler but instead use that money on insurance
