First fault :-( - FIXED!
« on: 05 April 2010, 06:35 »
After 2 years of ownership I at last have a fault. Car is sept 2005(55) my06, so out of warranty.

Was driving on a long journey, I turned the heated mirrors off whilst attempting to monitor what if any impact turning off all the toys would have on my mpg when....
The mfd2 reset and the fan gave a strange one off puff....

Anyhoo, just before that the washer low alarm sounded. Thought the above quite odd but carried on regardless. Later in the journey I pulled on the washer stalk and nothing, I pushed and the rear wipe skooshed as normal with the rear wiper working away merrily. I tried the wipers they were ok, put my xenons on and the headlight wash is away too.

I've checked all fuses I can find though can't see any on the passenger side.

So, in summary, no flick wipe (the wipers don't move and the water pump makes no sound), also no headlight wash either. Apart from that the wipers work as normal and the rear wash works too.

Any ideas anyone? I'm thinking fuse I can't find or relay somewhere?

Hope someone can help I'm brassic this month :-(

Was it definately the low-washer fluid warning beep or just a random beep from the dash?

Only thing I can think of is that the car thinks the bonnet is open (faulty micro switch on bonnet catch) and is stopping the wipers from working????

Sounds like you need to find someone with VAG com.......

Yep it was low fluid warning. It was low. Since topped up.
The wipers wouldn't work at all if the bonnet microswitch was faulty though. At the minute I'm thinking it's the wiper stalk which is just not registering when I pull it towards me. Can't seem to find any other common failure point that would give these symptoms.

I had this problem with my mk5 04 plate. Turned out the the car was thinking the bonnet was open. so i disconnected the sensor wire in the bonnet and it has worked ever since. tryed plugging the wire back in and it stops working again ( if the car thinks the bonnet is open it will make no sound what so ever and washers/wipers will not work on the front)

Cheers mate, but the wipers do work fine, its just the flick wipe function that doesnt, surely if the bonnet switch was showing open none of the wiper functions would operate?

ok its not the microswitch then...Wipers work as normal.

On pulling the lever however nothing happens, its like it doesnt register the function. Pushing the lever works the rear as normal.

My money would be on a fuse, I36 I think from reading through some similar faults but the fuse physically looks ok. Admittedly I havent tested it with a multimeter but it physically looks good so I am reckoning that this is NOT the root of the fault.

What would cause the flick wipe not to work? Does anyone know if a relay would "part fail", ie still operates for part of the function of the wiper (ie skoosh the rear windscreen and operate the rear wiper) and doesn't work for the flick wipe...if this part of the signal is not getting through then I reckon that the headlight washers wouldnt get it either.

My money is on a relay,....not quite sure where to find it though, the book is as clear as my windscreen at present!

Does anyone know where on earth the panels on pages 15 and 16 are ? I am thinking behind glove box....

ok....dont ask me how but the fault above has cleared itself!

The logic must have got screwed up somehow when I flicked the wing mirrors switch and at the same time the radio reset...thought it odd at the time.  No fuses blown....guess it just took a little time to sort itself out...how very zen.

Oh well, at least its working :-)
