PAS pump question - Advice Please
« on: 21 March 2010, 17:32 »
Hi,
Newb here, so any advice will be gratefully received.

Just bought a 16v (and my 1st golf) from a previous member on here.
Was giving it a much needed service earlier and one of the items was to change the squeeky PAS belt.
I cant seem to slacken the belt off, ive loosened off any bolts that i can see would hold it in place and then tried to wind it back using the adjuster gear. So advice on this procedure please?

Also in trying to do so and therefore getting impatient i gave the front of the pump a slight smack with a wooden mallet thinking i wouldnt damage it... and ive hit what looks like a ball-bearing in the casing therefore causing a leak from the pump. Can anyone tell me what this is there for and if youd think its fixable or if i need to get a replacement pump due to my stupidity :undecided:?

Many thanks in advance

theres that 13mm bolt with the big toothed hex wheel, another 13mm bolt on the opposite side going into a slotted hole on the alternator bracket and then the main 15mm pivot bolt thru the pas pump bracket.  MK3 Golfy 1.8-2.0 8v and 16v pas pumps are all the same fitment, so getting a good replacement shouldnt be too hard if you cant repair it :)

mine was a fatherless son, i had to get plenty of duck oil on it and slowly prize it back and forth with a big screwdriver to shift it!

ha ha ha spot the sensorship!

sounds like you hit the presure valve, new pump needed.there is 3 bolts holding this, but 1 bolt is behind the pas bracket, spanner only, takecare with the adjuster sprocket, can strip the teeth so fast!
