Which HU have you got?  The rcd500?

This is the weakest point in the standard system IMO.  I changed from the RCD300 (same as 500 but without multi cd) to the MFD2 sat nav and the change in sound quality was night and day.  I'm sure you'd get an even better improvement if you went aftermarket or spent a bit more and got an RNS510.

Keeping the RCD headunit and putting new speakers in is like putting a silk hat on a pig.

The MFD2 has one slot, and if you are using the nav dvd you cant use it all for music ...  Frankly as a sat nav a tom tom is much better but it does sound better and look better than the RCD's.

I have it connected up to my armrest ipod thing no issue there.  Personally I don't mind not having use of the CD player as I just use my ipod all the time but I can understand for others it might be a pain.

The RNS510 is a much better piece of kit and includes a hard drive for the nav information and mp3 if you like.  It is of course more expensive than the MFD2 though ...

THB an aftermarket stereo would probably knock spots of all the above for sound quality, but anything is an improvement over the RCD's.
