C and R enterprises- mk2 carb problemos
« on: 25 November 2004, 00:29 »
Hey Guys,

Was just wondering if anyones had any experience of them and what they think. I have a mk2 1.6 driver and was having problems with it cutting out. I would be driving along, put my foot down and then no power and then kind of stammering and then it would cut out.

Once it had cut out it would start again and then if I put my foot down on the throttle nothing would happen, no revs and then it would cut out again. Impossible to get moving.

I took it to C and R in Nottingham. The guy there is called Steve Creswell, he writes the tech FAQ's for 'the golf' magazine. He seemed to know his stuff and went off on one about the carb freezing up coz it was not getting enough hot air from the manifold coz the vacum operated flap was not working. This controlls whether hot or cold air is fed to the carb. He replaced the air box unit so the flap worked and fitted a new thermo swith which tells the flap when to open/close. ?150 later all was well and the car was going.

This was about 2 weeks ago. Anyway the same thing happened tonight, no power, car cut out. bollocks!

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what the problem is?

Anybody know anything about C and R? also whats the deal with garages not fixing things they say they have, can you get your money back?

Sorry for the long post but really annoyed at paying somebody ?40 an hour to look at my car and then them not fixing it : (

Cheers guys

i wouldnt go there for problems like you got, they more of a tuning company, so will probably overcharge you compaared to a normal garage.

have you still got the pierburg carb in there? the first mod on drivers is usually get rid of this and put in a webber carb, cant remember which model tho ??? wont be too expensive either.

for the time being see if the new flap has stopped working too ???

Yup sounds like carb icing to me, take the small end pipe off and check the flap opens when the engine is running, and that the warm air pipe to the exhaust manifold is OK.  Next check the 2 air hoses are connected to the airbox, and that the rear one is still connected to the back of the carb!
