You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

I used to get this in my Gti, give the Throttle Body a good clean if you haven't already.

done air filter and throttle body it only happens at low revs around 2000rpm been told it may be the fuel pump that sits in the tank but thats not cheap lol rather try all other avenues 1st

My 150 diesel did this until I had it serviced a few weeks ago. The fuel filter was changed as well as the air filter and problem solved!

Hope this helps

+1 do fuel filter first.  £11 from VW and an easy change - just don't smoke whilst you do it!

Could also be ignition timing - is yours set correctly - mechanical (cam/crank) and ignition (dizzy pos).  Worth checking that the crank sensor wiring is OK - just fixed this problem with mine - similar problem.  Look under the oil filter with a torch. Check cam sensor wiring too (on dizzy).

Mine looked like : http://javalins.wordpress.com/2010/03/13/dodgy-sensor-wiring/

Failing that relays (ecu no30 and fuel pump no167)

As Javelin mentions above, id opt for checking these parts, especially the crank speed sensor which is an uber common fault due to the cable breaking down due to heat generated from the engine and oil filter located above it. They normally just crumble in your hands as he's pictured. Mine caused running issues for months and ive heat wrapped the the replacement one.
