I'm wondering how people who have fitted aftermarket rims find how the handling has been affected?
I recently purchased a16v mk3 anniversary with a set of 17inch rs8 style rims on. I didn't like the look of them(imo too modern on a mk3), they rubbed badly with a load on, and seeing as the car is quite rare i said it would be nicer to have the originals on.
So i got hold of a set of 16 inch bbs rx2s and low an behold the handling has improved no end. amazing difference! the car seems so much more responsive and direct to drive.
Anyone else found this to be the case? Or even the opposite a set of wheels that make the car nicer to drive??
I know a fair share of the cars in the pics section are on non-standard rims just curious...
4 things make huge differences:
Weight - heavy wheels kill the handling, and dull accelleration.
Diameter - overly large kill the accelleration by upping the gearing.
Width - overly wide dull the handling (what bit there is!) and make it less nimble.
Offset - can destroy the steering by making it tramline.
Like many, I've tried 15s, 16s and 17s and fine the best compromise for outright grip, fun, looks, handling etc to be 16s - modest width (7") with a sensible offset (30-43).
