Mk2 16v 2Y Gearbox Clutch Probs
« on: 08 March 2010, 00:36 »
Right, had this prob for wee while now with my 91 mk2 16v

Car has had a replcement clutch/ clutch cable( auto adjusting type) within the last 1000 miles. was bedded in properly and was fine intially.

However, clutch slips like a pig in 3rd and 4th under acceleration. 1st 2nd are fine but shift from 2nd to 3rd under load and I can almost hit the limiter without increase in speed same in 4th.

Have changed the cable wich has improved matters marginally.

Anyone got any suggetstions?  don't really want to pull out the clutch. I have considered that a seal has gone in the box smearing oil all over my nice new clutch

Seems odd though that the clutch doesn't slip all the time just in 3rd and 4th.

Any wisdom or suggestions gratefully recieved..

They normally start slipping in the high gears first as there is more road and wind resistance at higher speeds.
Sounds like the pressure plate is too weak or the driven plate too thin. The flywheel could be badly worn or polished or there is oil on it although that usually manifests itself first as a judder when pulling away.
If its been slipping a lot then it may be too late as it could now be cooked. Are you sure the cable is adjusted to let the pressure off the plate properly? Was the flywheel deglazed?

Deglazed flywheel? Doubt it, the guy who fitted it didn't even refit the speedo cable properly. Wept g/box fluid on my old boys drive when I was away on holiday
Cable was replaced/adjusted as per Haynes instruction.
Would be a bit pish if a brand spanky new clutch is gubbed for sake of being sh!tly fitted.

I'm going to have to bite the bullet and crack the gearbox off to have a peek amn't I?

Dunno if I can take it back to the garage where it was fitted. Guy says he doesn't think it's his problem

I'd try a manuel adjust cable if I were you, those automatic things are absolute sh!te and you can never get it how you want it imo. Sorry thats the only thing I can think off without taking the box off.

The clutch will slip in higher gears first because its under more load.
How long ago was the clutch fitted? did the old clutch slip?

Shouldn't weep oil from the speedo connection while static unless the box was way over filled with oil, you can't really do that unless you fill it through the speedo hole. The refill/level hole is way down from that. If the speedo hole seal is not fitted properly you can get get a bit of 'splash leakage' while on the move but usually only ends up as a couple of drips when parked. Had a knackered seal on mine when I got it but still only leaked a couple of drips........ Unless of course you have parked facing up hill on a 1 in 3 drive.

Yeah old one slipped like a buttered pig, clutch was included in sale price, saw the one that came out and it had no meat on it all.
New clutch was fitted under 500miles ago, have hardly used it as had another problem with waterpump. sorted now and found slippy clutch persists.

Yeah someone else suggested that to me too. Might give it a whirl as they have the bonus of being cheaper too

Did you not get a warranty with the work done?
Sounds like a failed oil seal contaminating the clutch, is there any smell?

Erm, I got a reciept outlining work carried out and part supplied.
Thought about oil seal but there isn't any smell.
Going to go and give it some stress tonight as I was late for work this morn and it didn't slip that I was aware of... Fingers crossed...

Shweeeet!

Fingers crossed I have solved my problem with simple clutch cable replaced!!

Changed it myself on the drive, not terribly difficult but I'm delighted it works and can now have full throttle again after months of tip toe mode.
The list of things wrong IS getting shorter

Cheers for everybodys input!!

Just to sort top mounts and tracking to get done this weekend
