Indicator stalk/lever
« on: 08 March 2010, 15:24 »
Have I bought the wrong part???

Bought an indicator stalk off Ebay described as suitable for '1988 - 1990' Golf Mk2 Gti.

Having just removed the lever from my own car - a '91 Mk2, I find that the hazard switch is part of the lever and there is a connector block with 5(?) spade connectors fitted to the unit - just behind the lever itself.
The one I've bought has no hazard switch and instead of the 5 bladed spade connector, there are row of fine copper coloured pins attached to the unit.

Do I have to do some further dismantling, or have I bought an indicator lever for an older model of Gti viz. - one where the hazard switch was on the dashboard itself?

Annoyed!!

Any help appreciated.

M

Yep, you've bought the wrong one. pre 90 has the hazard on the dash, post 90 as part of the stalk.

Yep wrong one...

It's the early version you have and AFAIK it can't be made to fit....

You have to be carefull when buying these as I bought one from a caddy... so it didn't have the rear wiper but did have the MFA...

Easy mistake to make...

Thankyou for your replies - I can see the unit on my own car has the hazard pop-up switch very much part of the unit/lever itself.

The picture of the lever on Ebay DID clearly show that there was no red hazard switch, but the seller stated it was suitable for 1988-90 car. I thought the hazard switch would therefore be unpluggable and transferable to replacement lever. The lever itself looked and is exactly the same shape as the one on my car and very different in appearance from the lever on my 1986 Mk2 Gti (where the hazard is on the dash. Hmmm!

Guess I'll have to put the thing back on Ebay.

Still annoyed!
.......thanks again for your replies.

You might be able to get a set of mk3 stalks for cheaper than mk2 90 spec ones. They fit exactly the same as mk2 ones, just use the hazard switch from the mk2! Unless you want to keep it original with the square stalks..

Thanks again to all who took the time to reply to original query....will put it down to a 'mistake' on my part

The reason I want to fit another lever is because the one on the car operates perfectly well when turning left - and self cancels when the wheel is straightened up.... however..

when turning right, the flashers work fine but the lever fails to self cancel and has to be pulled back manually.... not critical, but annoying ....

Is the fault in the lever unit itself, or has something failed within the steering column/wheel??

Thankyou.
