cold idle dies
« on: 02 March 2010, 23:39 »
Hey fella's, been around the mk4 section for a while but just got the wife a mk3 as she just passed her test, anywho, i got a niggle with it, apparently its done it for a while, on cold start up it will idle fine for maybe 1 minute then die, revs dip then it cuts out, start her up again and let her warm and runs fine, do they have auto choke/cold start? i was thinking maybe its not putting enough or might be to much fuel while its engaged. its just a 93 model 1.8 cl.

cheers.

no mate, well if its injected its done via the ecu and injection system, will likely have an idle control valve of some kind, never laid eyes on a 1.8 but guessing its single point injection wi an idle valve and a distributor?

could be idle valve, inlet air temp sensor (if it has one) or just needs plugs? The idle valve sticking is common on other cars ive had.

maybe someone wi more info on the 1.8 will come along, but hope this helps ;)

the 1.8 GL's were single point injection, and the idle control was a stepper motor on the throttle butterfly (which is why you can see it move when you start/key on).

Coolant temp sensor sounds a likely bet.  Dead easy to change, and £30 from VW.

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.
