hot oil/grease smell?

i can smell a grease kinda smell when i get out the car,  a friend of a friend with a tdi said he had the same with cv boot leaking? i cant see owt near any of the boots ? this is leading me more to think its a boost leak or some kind of leak ? or is he right? is this a common thing?

yes if the inner boot leaks it can spat the grease on the hot engine and give off the smell

been under the car this dinner and the cv's seem ok ? there does seem to be oil on top of the gearbox tho, is there a breather or any thing that could have come off?

I'm guessing Y shaped breather hose on the side of the rocker cover has got a hole in it

i havent looked , but i thought of that tonight, i rung my mate ( who i bought it off ) because he recently took the cai off and put the standard box back on , im wondering if hes broke the pipe ? he says he remembers putting it back on. im wondering if this is linked to my emmisions light bein on?

they wear anyways as they are made from normal rubber which the oil vapour rots away.

It will prob be the reason your light is on if not that pipe one of the others

You'll prob have a fuel system fault logged too
