abs warning light
« on: 23 February 2010, 20:40 »
I bought my car with the abs light not working! So today i finally got round to investigating why, I already guessed it would be disconnected and supprise supprise it was! I reconnected the plug expecting to get a constant warning light when i turned the ignition but the light still didn't come on at all?? So my question is what would be my next step? I'm gonna check the fuses tomorrow but even if thats been taken out its almost certainly to hide a fault

If the car has had a previous ABS fault and the owner got fed up with the light been constantly illuminated they may have disconnected the warning light or taken the bulb out. The bulb may have even just blown seeing as they do come on every time you start the car any way for a few seconds. Try connecting Vagcom up to the vehicle to see if there are any underlying ABS issues, failing that maybe get another warning light from a breakers or Ebay for pennies.

Even if a vagcom scan does reveal a problem it'll more than likely just be an ABS sensor which you can buy for about £20 anyhow.

the entire unit can be disconnected, it lives under the rear seat base squab and if its unplugged, no abs or light is shown. My brothers previous vr6 had a weird abs fault in that over 20mph, the abs would start braking by itself, under 20 no reaction, so we pulled the main plug out of the controller and that stopped it, no lights were shown after that.

The previous owner may have had the same problem, and done the same thing, tho as has been said, could have been down to a sensor signalling that the wheels were spinning free hence it tried to brake to control wheelspin that wasnt happening...

Well my vagcom cable will be here in the next couple days so i will see if that will come up with anything, hopefully it will only be the wheel sensors!

Ok ran vagcom and front and rear left sensor and rear right to so will replace all them, but in the mean time need to check where this abs light is disconnected! On a 96 model where is the abs ecu? And also the abs fuses too?
