air con
« on: 24 February 2010, 09:24 »
morning haven,t been on here for a while using the golf as the main car now .noticed the air con switch light was flickering on when it was turned off,the car was running poorly like the air con was turning on and off revs going up and down  when i turned the air con on car ran fine apart from higher revs. after a while i turned it off and it was all fine for 100miles and now its back the switch light is on all the time aircon is on all the time so high revs. ive unpluged the switch this makes no differance air con stays on.ive looked at taking the relay out but theres not one in there.it looks like the aircon is on all the time and all the switch does is turn it off. any ideas

I would check to see if the clutch has failed on the compressor.

With the engine running have a look at the compressor and see if the center of the pulley is turning with the outer part if so then the clutch is engaged, that would suggest that the clutch has failed or the relay is stuck.

Also worth checking that with the switch off see if that makes any difference as it could be the light on the switch is faulty.

Air con compressor is on the front of the engine and has 2 big (ish) pipes going to it.

found it  i thought that was it,it might as well have a big flag on it.ran the car pulley spins and the clutch. unplugged the aircon (connector on the aircon unit) and tried again clutch does not spin so thats good must be switch is faulty, left it unplugged.its still odd theres no relay plugged in and it still works

not all mk3s have an a/c relay in the same spot, some have them above the fusebox iirc. fact it switches on without one in the fusebox suggests it doesnt need it ;)
