new mk4 owner
« on: 12 February 2010, 21:08 »
hiya ppl,
just thought id join back up and say hello!
been off the vw scene for a long time, the past 30+ cars have been mainly of jap origin, but im back with a 52 reg gti turbo
my mate has had it for the past 3yrs, its had a recent service/cambelt/waterpump , its got 94k , 4 door in dark silver.
apart from a bit of work iv done on it for him in the past i dont really need know that much about the mk4 turbo.
last year i fit him the ebay special fmic ( no map sensor fitting so a days work ended up bein wasted )
fit an induction kit with pipe into arch ( now back to standard again )
it is currently standard apart from a ecu re-map which he had done by some1 on ebay? it was on the RR the next day with 190bhp, not sure who or what this guy did but it seems ok to me , no big spikes and pulls smooth !
ive paid £2k which i think is good, it needs a little tlc but nothing too bad -
*rear suspension knocks has done for a long time - bushes?
*a small knock on the front bumper , needs pulling back up to meet the arch a few mm
*slight carpark crease on nearside wing
*emmisions light is on-maybe caused by maf / ebay airfilter? lambda ?
all in all it runs well and is clean

im plannin on a few bits in time -
coilovers and polybushes
n75j  valve
larger turbo - any other tt 225 bits that can help ?
exhaust and de-cat-( is there a turbo elbow or is the de-cat all 1 piece from turbo? )

any advice on the above - brands etc welcome

has any1 done mods to the intake ? ie inlet manifold / throttle body ? ive done work for ppl in the past that i could try on this, i recently bored out a throttle body for some1 with a re-worked/spindle and new butterfly, then bored out the mouth of the inlet manifold , all was polished after , has this been done before? any custom intake manifolds out there or is the standard good ?
as you may have guessed from above im a cnc machinest and always making anything i can rather than spend lol so if any1 out there knows of anything out there that is billet / fabricated that i could make for my mk4 gti ( or for any1 else , i normally make a few of what ever im doing to sell and recover costs )

anyway hello again , looking forward to hearing any comments. cheers . jay

Nice car, i like the rims.  30+ cars, if your not a dealer, better watch out for the tax man.  They might think you are dealing cars at that rate.

im not a dealer and iv only bumped 1 car lol , but ur right , i get bored easy .but i have been driving 12 years now in that time theres been 38 cars and 4 bikes , and a MASSIVE amount of debt which has only just been sorted !
heres how the first 2 years went ;

vw polo saloon 1.0
2 x minis
mk1 vauxhaul astra sr 1.6
nissan sunny zx 1.8 16v
suzuki sj410 ( dont start ! lol )
bmw 525
st185 celica gt4
r33 gts
bmw e30 325 cab
another gt4 , then i went to bikes , zzr600 restricted to 33bhp though

as you can see theres already some fruity cars lol once my daughter was born i did get a little more sensible, but i still never hung on to a motor more than 6 months, until recently , im getting better lol the golf is ideal for me now - 4 doors / reliable / still pretty quick / tunable , just what i need cos il never grow up ! lol

Welcome

Nice colour!  Nice price!

I'm pretty sure the throttle body cannot be ported or polished.  Leave it be.  The standard inlet setup is just fine!  Perhaps look at a turbo hose kit from Forge or Samco and a decent panel filter to improve air flow.
N75 look at "Awesome" for an upgraded unit.
Emissions light could be a dodgy hose?  :undecided:
De-cat is one piece from turbo (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-4-1-8T-GTI-20V-TURBO-DECAT-DOWNPIPE-DOWN-PIPE_W0QQitemZ170385555980QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item27abc5420c)

I'll get thinking for anything I want fabricated.... are you handy with a bit of TIG welding, can you knock up a catch can?

Stick with this car as they are much fun!

my welding skills are good but i leave tig down to one of the other lads , im more into design and machining from billet aliminium/stainless etc ,an example being solid engine mounts , a thing i get asked to do from time to time
was thinking of going down the fmic route, but from my last attempt when this car was my mates we had to butcher the bumper
also what engine do i have aug/aum whats the difference?
what are bolt on upgrades from the 225 tt ?

just used search as i should av done , looks like aum
dont know that much about re-maps , it was done when the car was totally standard resulting in 190bhp, if i put the cai back on along with an exhaust, de-cat and n75j will it need re-mapping ? what bhp will this achieve ?
