Door locks and dodgy keys....
« on: 31 January 2010, 23:00 »
Right,

My '91 mk2 has a dodgy/worn lock barrel on the drivers side. I have a set of 2 keys but only one works on the door, ignition and boot. The spare only works on the ignition and boot (delocked passenger door) NOT the door which I didnt realise until now... All was fine until the one key that worked on all the locks snapped at the base (was a flip key conversion done by previous owner and was a bit flimsy!) so now im left with one and a half keys  and can't lock/unlock my car easily - it can be done with the broken key but needs a bit of wiggling and something to grip it to turn it :undecided:

So I bought a blank key and went and got it cut to the same profile as the broken one thinking it would solve the problem but it only works on the ignition and boot the same as the spare does!! I noticed the snapped key was quite badly worn so I got the bloke to file off the newly cut key a bit to make it more like the snapped one which still made no difference

SOOOOO..... advice please chaps. (There is no passenger lock which is a pain, otherwise id just do a quick switcheroo)

1) I thought about swapping the boot lock and door lock as I have central locking so wouldnt matter not being able to operate the boot independantly but after a bit of reading I understand they are different?
2) Get a door lock from a scrappy or dealer but live with having 2 different keys - new one for door/old one for ignition and boot?
3) Get all the locks and ignition from a scrappy and swap em all over (how hard is it to do the ignition barrel?! Done a mini before but I suspect mk2s are a tad more sophisticated?? Or not?!)
4) I've read its possible to get a barrel from a scrappy and somehow change it to fit my key - anyone got a 'how to' or more info?!
5) File down the new key some more and hope it eventually works
6) Just give up & leave it unlocked :lipsrsealed:

Cheers guys

if you take lock out of boot it wont fit drivers door, however you can take all the tumblers out of it and fit em into the drivers door lock.
what i would do here is de-lock drivers door and fit remote central locking. dead easy as you already have central locking, you just fit 1x master actuator (5 wires) from kit into drivers door attached to lock pin, then plug it to cl control unit and give the cl unit live & earth. its literally that simple!

What remote central locking kits would you recommend?

You need to find a old skool Auto locksmith they will be able to cut a key to the worn locks and or change the lock internals for new 1s keeping the same key code.

Yeah I guess it must be possible as I have a key (well, half!!) that still works but is it worth the hassle? If it's that worn is it worth saving or would I just be throwing good money after bad?

depends what you want really, ebay has loads of kits and they're all just about as good as each other, main thing is what you want your keyfob to look like!

rclick does nice high quality kits, even do a MK4 type fob which you can hook up to a boot popper and total closure tho for TC to work need a Corrado 1 touch loom.

Took it to an autolock specialist (moorlands, bournemouth - v good ) the bloke took it apart and said the lock isn't worn & cut me a new key for that lock. All fine and dandy... buuuut now that new key doesn't fit my other locks and looks different. At least I have a key though!!!

He said it looked like the drivers barrel had been changed at some point & the flip key was a total bodge that somehow worked on both?! I'm not convinced myself but it does seem to be the only answer - the two keys do look very different (although the top and middle are VERY similar & just the base is wide on the door key and narrow on the ignition key). Weird.

So because I now have 2 keys I'm going down the CL route.

Had a look on there & they do look decent enough, I can't see which one has the boot popper option though - now that would be trick. Not fussed about TC as I dont have leccy windows or sunroof (yet)
