Servicing my 06 gti just bits of advice please??
« on: 02 February 2010, 20:59 »
Hi there

I have a 5 door 2 litre mk5 gti and want to give it a basic service, my mate is a mechanic but was wondering,
What oil I should use( not long life service)
What plugs it will need? iridium etc etc
What filters, oil( original?) air ( k and n etc)
Anything else to do?

Plus any links tips how to change these and replace the parts etc.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

If your mechanic mate needs some advice on how to change these things then keep him away from your car LOL!

Unless it's ultra high miles, you will be better off getting it serviced by a specialist as they make very little margin these days and you will still have a FSH when it comes to selling. Plus, if they know their way around MkV's then can often spot things that might be about to fail and know cost-effective fixes for common problems.

Just my 2p's worth.

Hi mate

thanks for that, I really just want to know how to change the plugs, what plugs you would recommend, what oil you would recommend etc. Its on 100k but has a great service history.

Its just a oil service according to the service book but wondered what plugs you would recommend plus what oil to use?
Any tips on taking the engine cover off as ive heard they can break easy?

Any help is appreciated.

The Euro parts website will have a most of the parts incl. plugs but oil wise i'd be using Mobil 1 ESF 5w 30 fully synthetic (VW recommended oil for the GTi). Might need things like spare sump plug and washer, just in case and a hex tool to remove the valance to get to the sump and filter.

With regards to taking the engine cover off you just need to be brave and pull up quite firmly. Disconnect the air intake first obviously.

There are some guide on the net how to do it (search google) but basically it just takes brute force and bravery.

Greasy the engine cover mounting points before you re-fit it. Makes it easier next time.
